Hilltop 2024 - Day 2!

Our second day at Hilltop started with a delicious breakfast which included cereal, fruit, toast and even a full English breakfast!

After feeling suitably full, we all started our first activities of the day. Group 1 were flying high first thing in the morning on the ‘Tree Top Trail’. This involved clipping ourselves on and off the safety wires and advancing through the course as the height increased.

Meanwhile, Group 2 got their walking boots on and headed off on ‘The Journey’. This was a 5 mile walk into the town of Sheringham. We trekked through woodland, across the town and alongside the beach front. We enjoyed a delicious ice-cream at the halfway point as an incentive to continue on our hike back to Hilltop! We spotted lots of British wildlife and plants/flowers along the way.

We all met back at Hilltop around 12.30pm for our lunch! We enjoyed warm sausage rolls and salad. Everyone was so polite and offered a helping hand when tidying their plates and crumbs away.

In the afternoon, it was Group 1’s turn to head off on ‘The Journey’. We used map skills and compasses to navigate our way to the top of Beeston Bump. As we had a little more time, we talked about the significance of the WW2 Y Station at the top, admiring the spectacular views of Sheringham and the seaside. We also enjoyed an ice cream and wandered down to the beach to have an explore of rockpools and playing on the sand!

Group 2 headed for the forest where we did our Bushcraft activities. We foraged for silver birch wood to make an effective fire. The children were taught how to find the best sticks to keep their fires alight and were fantastic at ‘nurturing’ their fires. We enjoyed toasting marshmallows and drinking some lovely hot chocolate with water that was boiled over our fires.

After our day of activities, there was more fun to be had at the pool! Both groups got a chance to swim in the outdoor pool and although it was chilly we still had lots of fun. By the time our evening meal came around we were very hungry! We enjoyed burger, chips and salad with chocolate sponge and custard for dessert.

Earlier in the evening, we were preparing for our room inspection where we were judged on how tidy our rooms were! Some put in more effort than others… but overall the rooms were very tidy and we were very impressed!

To finish our jam-packed day, we ended on a high with a game of ‘Mad Hatters’. When we returned back to our dorms, we awarded ‘Hilltop Stars’ for those that had stood out to us so far our trip.

A brilliant day had by all!
