Our Second Day at Horstead (2025)

It’s been a jam-packed second day! We started the morning (very early for some of us!!) by making our sandwiches or wraps for lunch and then we enjoyed breakfast in the dining room – toast, cereals and yogurts.

We all did camp cookery throughout the day, foraging to make nettle and mint tea and making our own Bannock bread on sticks, which we then got to taste!

We also all challenged ourselves on the rock-climbing tower and zipwire. It was hard work using the hand holds and foot grips to pull ourselves up and lots of us enjoyed flying over the garden on the zipwire!

Finally, even though the weather hugely improved today, we ended up soggy by the end of our canoeing session – there was lots of splashing and even some jumping into the river! There was lots of great teamwork and perseverance when the canoe seemed to have a mind of its own.

After a delicious BBQ dinner of burgers, hotdogs and kebabs with an ice cream cone for dessert, we gathered around the firepit for a bonfire to toast marshmallows and sing some campfire songs.

Here are some of the children’s thoughts from today:

Jimmy – “It was so fun jumping into the water, I’ve got wet feet and soggy hair but it was worth it!”

Primrose – “I thought I would pass out with fear at the top of the zipwire but then I just did it!”

Thomas – “The bread we made on the fire was better than bread from a bakery.”

Freddie – “I did it! I didn’t get in the kayak last year but I’m in the canoe Miss Cragoe!”

Evie RS – “Being on the zipline felt like an octopus in the air!”

Evie VH – “Best BBQ of my life!!”
